The national chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) announced on Wednesday that it has endorsed Democrat Mark Pera's campaign in Illinois' 3rd U.S. Congressional District.
The national chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) announced on Wednesday that it has endorsed Democrat Mark Pera's campaign in Illinois' 3rd U.S. Congressional District.
NOW joins NARAL/Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood in endorsing Mark Pera for Congress.
"The National Organization for Women Political Action Committee is proud to endorse Mark Pera. Mark will be a strong voice in the U.S. Congress and will work hard to sponsor and support legislation that will be good for women and families," Kim Gandy, NOW PAC chair, said.
"We know that we can count on him to protect women's reproductive rights, eliminate violence against women, and promote economic justice and civil rights for all."
Pera said he was proud to have NOW's support.
"Dan Lipinski is out of touch with the values of Democratic voters in our district. His record on women's issues is atrocious. It's quite an honor to receive NOW's endorsement," Pera said.
NOW has endorsed just three Congressional candidates: Pera and Democrats Donna Edwards, MD-04, and Niki Tsongas, MA-05, who won a special House election in 2007.
NOW has over 500,000 members. It is the largest feminist advocacy group in the U.S. The organization advocates bringing women into full participation in society - sharing equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities with men - while living free from discrimination.
The Democratic Primary Election in Illinois is on Feb. 5, just five days from today.
